Status of broadband internet speeds in Uganda: Is 7.24 Mbps impressive enough?

The status of both broadband and mobile internet in Uganda has generally improved and the average download speed increased a by 2.58 Mbps in Kampala over the previous year. As of March 2015, the average download speed in Uganda is 7.24 Mbps — thanks, in part, to increased infrastructure investments by ISPs especially the advent of 4G-LTE technology. Rwanda manages to beat the pants off Uganda with average download speeds 8.05 Mbps. This means the speeds in Uganda are not impressive compared to other countries in East Africa including Kenya (7.63), Tanazina (4.98 Mbps) and Burundi (4.5 Mbps). Those speeds are only enough to move Uganda from 141st from April last year up to 123rd out of 199 connected countries worldwide and Rwanda at 111st out of 199.

These figures come from Ookla’s Speedtest March 2015 survey. In April of last year, Uganda’s national average hovered at 4.66 Mbps; which is five times slower than the global average of 22.9Mbps. According to these Ookla Speedtest survey, these are the individual contributions to the average 7.24 Mbps average score per carrier: Smile Communications ranked the highest at 10.14 Mbps, Uganda Telecoms (6.31 Mbps), MTN Uganda (5.37 Mbps)  and Orange Uganda now Africell (3.12 Mbps).
