How to replace a lost/stolen SIM card in Uganda

The world has reached that level of development that losing access to your mobile number can feel like losing a lifeline. For Ugandans, the process of recovering a stolen SIM card is more than just a minor inconvenience—it’s a crucial step in maintaining digital identity and security.

If you’ve discovered your SIM card is stolen, time is of the essence. The telcos offer a quick solution: simply call 100 or send a direct message to their social media accounts to block your SIM card immediately.

This rapid response can prevent unauthorized usage and protect your mobile money, bank account, and personal data.

    The police report

The journey to reclaim your digital identity begins at your local police station.   The police will issue you a letter, which becomes your golden ticket for the next steps. Double-check that the details on the police letter match your National ID exactly. Any discrepancies could lead to delays or complications down the line.

    The service center visit

Armed with your police letter and original identification, your next stop is an authorized service center of your mobile network operator. Here’s what you’ll need:

    • For Ugandan citizens: Your National ID
    • For foreigners: A valid passport
    • For refugees: Your Refugee ID

At the service center, you’ll fill out a fresh registration form and provide biometric data, including a new passport photograph. This stringent process ensures that only the rightful owner can reclaim the SIM card, adding a layer of security in our digital age.

    Verification and activation

Once you’ve completed the in-person process, your information will be verified with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). This step is crucial in preventing fraud and ensuring the integrity of Uganda’s mobile networks.

While the process might seem daunting, the financial burden is relatively light. Most operators charge between UGX 1,500 to 2,000 for SIM card replacement. It’s a small price to pay for regaining access to your digital life.
