MTN reportedly Introduces Fiber-to-the-Home Services in Selected Areas Across Uganda

In the midst of the pandemic, social media blockage, and telecommuting, Uganda’s leading telecom giant has reportedly gone ahead to launch fiber to the home (FTTH) services to select areas in the country.

Already, MTN has been offering fiber to select businesses across the city but this now expands the clientele to include home clients that have previously been served by its home internet service called MTN WakaNet, via a wireless connection.

Include don this list of served areas is Kololo, Naguru, Ntinda, Entebbe, Nakasero Hill, Muyenga, Namuwongo, Kira, Kisaasi, Bweyogerere, Mukono, Jinja, Mbale, Arua and Lira.

What would the pricing for the fiber-to-the-home packages?

Current packages for this initiative are 10Mbps for UGX 179,000 and 40Mbps for UGX 279,000 both attracting an installation fee of UGX 100,000.

We reached out to a few MTN reps who were bullish about the availability of the service but declined to divulge more specific details. However, some did confirm that qualifying customers must be within an arm’s length from MTN’s fiber network, which sprawls across the country.

The service could also benefit from the increased adoption of telecommuting, which was catapulted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasingly, many people are opting to work from home as a measure to curb the pandemic and in the process, it has led to an increased usage of bandwidth by homeowners and subscriptions. Besides the usual work staff entertainment, homeschooling among others join on the list.

MTN’s fiber to the home service joins a host of other providers like Zuku, Simba, Liquid among others that offer the same service albeit at a smaller scale. MTN’s foray hopefully could drive adoption even further since it has a large fiber network
