Paying for goods and services online which include; Ebay, Uber, Netflix, Showmax, Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube Prime or may be a website hosting service can be challenging using MTN mobile money. But this shouldn’t be very complex and we have a simple hack for you today.
First you need to understand that most of these online services in the USA support payments via PayPal, Visa or Mastercard. Members in some countries and regions may only use PayPal to send payments and not receive payments due to the complexities of global finance. Paypal is always promising to improve services for its customers with limited functionalities and hopes to expand their features in these countries in the future. On top of this there is no MTN mobile money connectivity with PayPal unlike MPesa in Kenya.
This all changed for MTN in September 2018, when MTN Uganda partnered with Mastercard and United Bank for Africa (UBA) to launch a new service that ships in quicker, safer and more convenient cardless payments globally.
MTN launched the virtual MoMoCard that started the telco’s fresh step towards a fruitful 10-year tenure as customers never had to suffer with physical cards in order to make payments. Additionally, UBA’s partnership with MTN resulted in a wide range of cutting-edge digital payment solutions being introduced in Uganda and this includes paying for online services like Netflix, Amazon Prime video, Ebay, Netflix, Uber to mention but a few.
How to get started
1. First, you need an MTN number with Mobile money services activated. With this, any MTN customer can create a virtual card number and use it like any other online banking account service like VISA.
2. After registration, your MoMocard will be linked to a bank account, and in-turn linked to your Mobile money account.
3. To get the MTN MoMocard is very easy. Simply dial *165*70# and select option 1 to create an MTN MoMocard.
3. Once registered, you will be given a 16-digit virtual card number once you opt to open an account using your MTN Mobile Money details and virtual card number comes complete with a CVV (security code) which is sent to your phone.
4. Now you are all set, with these details (in bold above), you can purchase anything worldwide and any mastercard-supported POS terminals.
Registration for MTN MoMocard costs UGX 1,000 and for every payment you make using the MTN MoMocard will be charged 3% of the transaction amount. These charges will be made on the customer’s MTN MoMo account.
With all that in mind, you will find that it is very easy to pay for any online goods or services including; Ebay, Uber, Netflix, Showmax, Amazon Prime, Hulu, PlayStore app, or any service that supports MasterCard payments. After you make a payment, you will receive a payment receipt via SMS to confirm that your purchase has been successful.
