This innovative project is set to revolutionize the delivery of financial services to underserved individuals, communities, and businesses, with a particular focus on farmers and small-scale enterprises.

The newly introduced Community Pass debit card is a pivotal step towards addressing the longstanding challenges faced by many in Uganda.

Farmers and small business owners, often excluded from essential financial services, will now benefit from improved accessibility, financial empowerment, a digital wallet, and simplified identity through this initiative.

The initiative directly tackles issues such as limited access to traditional banking services, lack of awareness, and inadequate infrastructure. The Community Pass card has a QR code functionality, allowing offline transactions, making it accessible even in areas with limited internet connectivity.

One of the program’s most promising aspects is its potential to revolutionize Uganda’s agricultural sector. The Community Pass enables farmers to receive digital payments, eliminating the need for cash transactions in the agricultural value chain.

This not only enhances efficiency but also addresses security concerns associated with carrying cash, marking a significant leap towards a safer and more streamlined process.

    What they said

During the launch, key stakeholders emphasized the significance of this initiative. Equity Bank underscored its commitment to reaching remote and underserved communities in Uganda.

Equity Bank Managing Director Anthony Kituuka said, “Through the Community Pass card, Equity will reach previously excluded groups such as farmers, small-scale traders, agri-businesses, and any other partners within the value chain to provide the much-needed financial services through the Community Pass platform. We believe that access to financial services is not just about having a bank account, it is empowering the individual to take control of their financial future and create opportunities for wealth creation.”

Mastercard highlighted the global expertise it brings to the partnership, ensuring the program’s scalability and sustainability.

“Recognizing the pivotal role of Africa’s agricultural sector, the new card aims to revolutionize the farming process by integrating digital payment systems, fostering economic expansion, and advancing financial inclusivity across the continent,” said Daniel Huba. Vice President, Community Pass Market Development, Sub Saharan Africa, Mastercard.

The success of the Community Pass program lies in the synergy between Equity Bank and Mastercard. Equity Bank’s deep understanding of the Ugandan market and extensive network, coupled with Mastercard’s global expertise in digital payments and financial technology, forms a formidable partnership.
