Lycamobile Uganda did a pre-launch of their services in January this year. The UK based telecom announced its entry into the Ugandan market at a event at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala. Unlike in other countries where it operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), in Uganda it runs full Mobile network operations after they acquired Tangerine Uganda and all its asset last year.
While their Network is still on trial, Lycamobile Uganda is offering staggeringly cheap data bundles. The company plans to have a country wide network that spans up to Elegu, Kabale, Busia and Mutukula. According to sources, the new telecom is still sorting out compliance issues around the new licensing framework needed by the communications regulator UCC before they can commercially launch. But this can not stop you from trying out their services.
If you want to try out Lycamobile Uganda’s data bundles you will have to part with UGX 10k for 20Gbs, UGX 25,000 for 50Gbs and UGX 45,000 for 100Gbs for a month. To put this into perspective — for UGX 50,000 you get 20GB, 20GB and 10GB monthly data on Airtel, Africel and MTN Uganda respectively. This makes Lyca’s 4G LTE mobile data bundles so attractive in so many ways as it doubles the amount of data for other networks at a cheaper price.
Data (GB) | Price (UGX) |
---|---|
20 | 10,000 |
50 | 25,000 |
100 | 45,000 |
In order to ensure they don’t close shop quickly, during their initial pre-launch Lycamobile Uganda said that they will partner with other operators in the market to ensure we stay afloat. But with over 25 million mobile phone users in the country and a nationwide penetration rate of 71% according to UCC.
The tricky bit is how to reload their data as the company is partnering with several payment aggregators in Uganda to fill this gap. We assume these attractive data bundles will apply for a specific time until the actual business reality hits. Do you plan to try out Lycamobile mobile Uganda’s new data bundles what do you think about them?
