Avoid the long queues: Here is how to register your MTN SIM card Online

This is not a drill! The queues you see above are real, as MTN Uganda customers flood the company’s customer service centers to beat the UCC imposed deadline which is 16 days from today. The communications regulator instructed all mobile companies to have all their subscribers registered or else face strict fines. So, remember when we told you MTN Uganda wants to be at the fore front of innovation? Well, just hours after the MTN CEO, Brian Gouldie announced at the MTN Innovation awards, the company is keeping its promise and rolling out another option to help people avoid the long queues and also beat the UCC deadline.

You can now register your MTN SIM card Online, via the company’s Facebook page and not on their website. Before you even attempt to try it out, you must have a scan or be in position to take a photo of your valid ID, preferably one of the following: National ID, Passport, Driver’s License, Student ID, Employee ID, Voter’s Card or LC Certificate. After that you are good to go.

The online registration portal will first prompt you to download the registration PDF document here. Fill in the document, scan or take a picture of the same downloaded document and upload it back. Also upload a scan of any of your valid ID documents (remember names should match) and finally submit all that information. The above registration process can be done here.

For those who are still lost and find the above process complicated, you can visit your nearest MTN Service Center or dealer outlet for further assistance although we think the above process is pretty straightforward. You can also track the status of your SIM Card Registration by dialing *197*1# and following the prompts.

Up to this point since the SIM card registration process kicked off two year ago, we’ve already established that you can still buy SIM cards for some telecom off the streets of Kampala without even registering for them. Unlike other carriers, MTN Uganda has a lot at stake since the company commands the biggest number of subscribers at over 11.1 million. UCC this time round also wants to prove that it’s not the toothless dog we’ve come to know and impose strict fines on the telcoms who defy their imposed deadline something that we have already seen happening in Nigeria that lead to a $5.2 billion fine and the resignation of the Group CEO.

Over to you Airtel, Africell and UTL.

    Update:

It seems MTN has Updated the process of the registration. You will no longer need to download the registration form. You can simply go here and update all your required information.
