Just when we thought the days of the megapixel wars was over, Japanese camera giant Canon has disproved us and announced a mind-blowing a 250 Megapixel camera head-spinning new sensor. The new 19,580 x 12,600 APS-H CMOS sensor has today sets the world record for the highest resolution in its size. In a press release published by Canon, the sensor will be able distinguish lettering on the side of an airplane from 18 km in the sky.

The sensor has a fast signal readout speed of 1.25 billion pixels a second, and the company  says it has good noise performance despite the huge pixel count. The sensor can be used to capture incredibly high-resolution video  — about 30 times sharper than 4K — at 5fps. Don’t expect to see this in your next smartphone or DSLR camera, as Canon says the technology could be used in “specialized surveillance and crime prevention tools, ultra-high-resolution measuring instruments and other industrial equipment, and the field of visual expression.”
