Samsung recently made a decision not to use Qualcomm’s next Snapdragon 810 processor in favor of its own custom-built Exyons processor for the much-anticipated Galaxy S6. The reason the company gave was the fact that the 810 was over heating during their tests and thus decided to ditch it. Did Samsung lie about the over heating issues with the Snapdragon 810 processor? According to STJS Gadgets Portal, tests were done on the processor that Samsung used on the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge the Snapdragon 801 and the new Snapdragon 810 and according to the results Samsung could have chosen the worst excuse to ditch Qualcomm’s latest offering. In fact other OEMs like LG have already come out to confidently dismissed the heating claims as a non-issue.
Two tests were ran on the devices, one with Asphalt 8 being played to check gaming performance, and the other where 4K video was recorded on the devices. The tests were done to see how the new chipset compares to what we are already familiar with by now. Skin temperature values were captured. The tests compared the skin temperatures, that is the temperature of the surface of the device (since this is what you are actually touching as you use the device) in a 25 degree Celsius room temperature environment.
For the initial tests, shown in the graph above it clearly demonstrates that the device running the rejected Snapdragon 810 managed to reach around 40°C while the older processor the Snapdragon 801 device was at 45°C. In the second test, below the 810 device was once again cooler, hitting 35°C while the Snapdragon 801 device reached around 43°C.
Overall, the tests conclude that the new generation Qualcomm chip is indeed cooler than the 801 in these specific tests on these particular devices in these ambient temperature situations. We cannot obviously neglect other use cases, like variations in device designs and variations in ambient temperatures, things could change considerably. With the over heating excuse out-of-the-way, there could be other genuine reasons for Samsung to have rejected Qualcomm’s processor. It could have done so just to promote it’s own Exynos processor since it probably has similar features to the 810. May be Samsung’s skin on top of Android is much heavier than ever, and that coupled with the pixels the processor it has to push on the 2k display make the processor to overheat on the Galaxy S6.
Whatever conclusions are drawn in these tests, wont revert Samsung’s decision and all we have to do is wait and compare the Galaxy s6’s and the Note 4’s performance.
