Housing Finance Bank customers in Uganda can now access essential banking services at more than 23,000 Quickteller agent locations nationwide, following a new partnership with Interswitch Uganda.

The move marks a significant expansion of everyday banking access for customers who previously depended on bank branches or other limited service points.

The collaboration brings cash deposits, withdrawals and balance enquiries closer to customers, reducing the need to visit a traditional bank branch for routine transactions. It also expands Housing Finance Bank’s physical service reach through Quickteller’s established agency banking network, which serves urban centres, towns and rural trading communities.

Everyday Banking Closer to Home

For many Ugandans, accessing a bank branch can mean travelling long distances, spending money on transport or taking time away from work. Agency banking offers a practical alternative by allowing customers to complete selected transactions through authorised agents operating in their communities.

Under the new arrangement, Housing Finance Bank customers can deposit cash, withdraw money and check account balances at participating Quickteller outlets. Depending on an agent’s operating hours, customers may also access these services outside conventional banking hours.

The partnership is particularly relevant to people who live or run businesses far from bank branches. Instead of planning a trip to town for every basic transaction, customers have another option closer to their homes, workplaces and businesses. That convenience matters especially for market vendors and traders handling daily cash transactions.

What Interswitch and Housing Finance Bank Say

Moris Seguya, Country General Manager at Interswitch Uganda, described the partnership as another step towards making financial services simpler and more accessible.

“Our goal is to make financial services simpler, accessible and more convenient for every Ugandan,” Seguya said.

He noted that bringing Housing Finance Bank onto the network benefits both customers and the small business owners operating Quickteller outlets. As more financial institutions join, agents can serve a wider customer base and potentially earn additional income from increased transaction activity.

Housing Finance Bank Chief Operating Officer Robert Mugabe Kusiima said the partnership supports the bank’s financial inclusion ambitions by bringing services closer to customers and reducing the need to travel with large amounts of cash.

Kusiima also highlighted a digital option for prospective customers: Housing Finance Bank accounts can be opened using the USSD code *225*11#, without visiting a branch. Together, the USSD service and expanded agency banking access offer customers different ways to start and manage their banking relationship.

A Boost for Financial Inclusion and Local Businesses

The agreement underscores the growing role of agency banking in Uganda’s financial services sector. By using existing neighbourhood businesses as service points, banks can extend access without relying solely on new physical branches.

For customers, the benefits centre on convenience and choice. For agents, the addition of Housing Finance Bank transactions could bring more visitors, higher transaction volumes and new opportunities to grow their businesses.

That activity can have a wider local impact. Many Quickteller agents are small business owners whose outlets already serve as important commercial points in their communities. Offering more banking services can help those businesses remain relevant while connecting residents to formal financial services.

The 23,000-plus locations also give Housing Finance Bank a broader channel through which to serve customers across the country. However, customers should confirm that their preferred agent supports the required transaction and check any applicable charges before proceeding.

Building on an Existing Technology Partnership

Interswitch and Housing Finance Bank are not starting from scratch. The organisations already work together through Interswitch’s domestic switching services, which support electronic transaction processing and connectivity.

Adding Quickteller Agency Banking extends that relationship from payment infrastructure into more customer-facing services.

The development also sits alongside Interswitch’s efforts to expand the Verve card network in Uganda and the wider region. As more institutions issue Verve cards and more merchants accept them, the company aims to broaden access to locally enabled card payments.

For Housing Finance Bank customers, though, the immediate change is straightforward: routine banking services are now available at participating Quickteller agents nationwide. In a market where proximity and convenience can shape how people use financial services, that wider access could make everyday banking significantly easier.
