Airtel Uganda has taken a significant step towards advancing financial inclusion with the launch of its API.
This event, attended by industry leaders, government officials, and technology enthusiasts, marks a new era in the telco’s digital transformation journey and is set to revolutionize the way software applications interact with each other, providing secure and inclusive financial services to all.
During the launch event, the Managing Director of Airtel Money, Japheth Aritho emphasized the need for integration and secure platforms in the industry. He expressed his commitment to continuous innovation and ensuring that every individual in the country is financially included through innovative means.
This dedication to financial inclusion is further supported by Airtel’s partnership with the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and other organizations to provide access to capital for underserved communities.

The Director of IT at Airtel, Donald Twesiga, highlighted the key features and goals of the Airtel Uganda API. He described it as a user-friendly and flexible interface that allows easy access to services through the internet.
Moreover, the API ensures that requests are authentic, authorized, validated, and processed even during high-demand periods. With clear and understandable documentation, developers can seamlessly integrate their applications with Airtel’s services, enhancing the overall user experience.
Mr. Chris Lukolyo, the Country Digital Lead at UNCDF, commended Airtel’s commitment to inclusive digital financial programs. By working closely with governments and partners like Airtel, the UNCDF aims to create an enabling policy environment that facilitates access to financial services for rural communities. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of bridging the digital divide and ensuring equal opportunities for all.
Airtel’s Managing Director, Mr. Manoj Murali, expressed his excitement about the OpenAPI launch and the company’s dedication to digital inclusion. He emphasized the impact of Airtel’s #UGNeedsMoreOfU campaign, which highlighted the need for enhanced connectivity throughout the country. Additionally, he announced that Airtel is now 5G ready, with 11 sites already tested and awaiting regulatory approval.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance, lauded Airtel’s efforts in driving technological progress and transformation in Uganda. He recognized the significance of open APIs in the rapidly evolving digital landscape and applauded Airtel’s innovation in inviting the government to witness this groundbreaking development.
