Picture yourself on a dusty stretch of road somewhere between Kisangani and the nearest town that still appears on most maps. The last Airtel tower faded from view an hour ago. Your phone’s signal bars have long since vanished. In the old world, that was the end of the conversation—no calls, no messages, no mobile money confirmation, nothing. You simply waited until civilisation reappeared.
That world is beginning to change.
Last week Airtel Africa and Elon Musk’s Starlink commercially switched on satellite-to-mobile connectivity in the DRC. It is the first time the technology has been offered to ordinary smartphone users on the continent as a live, paying service. Compatible handsets can now talk directly to Starlink satellites when no terrestrial tower is in range, provided the user has a reasonably clear view of the sky. No special satellite phone required. No bulky dish. Just the device already sitting in your pocket.
For anyone who has ever driven the empty highways of northern Zambia, crossed the Sahel, or tried to stay in touch from a fishing village on Lake Tanganyika, the idea lands with particular force.
Traditional mobile networks are built around steel and concrete. Towers cost money to erect, power, secure and maintain. In sparsely populated or rugged terrain the economics often do not add up. Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell approach offers a different calculation: put the infrastructure in orbit once, and let it serve vast areas that would otherwise remain dark.
The service in the DRC is still limited. Speeds and capacity are modest compared with a solid 4G or 5G connection in Kinshasa or Lubumbashi. Messaging and basic data work; high-definition video streaming does not. Yet that almost misses the larger point. The breakthrough is not that satellite connectivity now matches terrestrial performance. It is that a device most people already own can remain reachable in places where building another tower has never made commercial sense.
Africa’s geography makes the technology unusually relevant. The continent has made remarkable progress rolling out mobile coverage over the past two decades, yet large stretches remain stubbornly under-served: remote agricultural zones, mountain communities, long stretches of highway, islands, and the vast interiors of countries such as the DRC itself.
Satellite-to-phone does not replace the need for fibre, spectrum or ground stations. Instead it acts as a coverage safety net, filling the gaps between conventional towers. The network of the future is likely to be hybrid. In Kampala, Nairobi or Lagos your phone will still lock onto the nearest Airtel base station.
The moment you move beyond that footprint, it will quietly hand over to a satellite hundreds of kilometres above. For the user the transition should eventually feel almost invisible.
Nowhere is the practical value clearer than in the realm of mobile money and everyday economic life. Across much of Africa a phone is far more than a communication tool. It is a bank account, a payment terminal, a credit application form, a marketplace and, increasingly, an insurance policy. Consider the trader who needs to confirm a payment while travelling between markets, the farmer waiting for an input subsidy to land, the boda rider whose route takes him through patchy coverage, or the field agent verifying a customer in a village without reliable power.
In each of those moments connectivity carries real economic weight. If satellite links can eventually support reliable, affordable data services, the effects could ripple into digital lending, crop insurance, logistics tracking and rural e-commerce.
There is a quieter shift at work here as well. For years satellite communications meant specialised, expensive equipment. Direct-to-device technology inverts that model. Rather than asking people to buy a new device, operators are teaching satellites to speak the language of the phones consumers already carry.
That dramatically widens the potential market and further entrenches the smartphone as the central instrument of Africa’s digital economy. The next meaningful leap in mobile connectivity may not be another camera or a faster processor. It may simply be the quiet disappearance of those dreaded “no service” messages in places where they used to be inevitable.
Plenty of questions remain. Device compatibility is still restricted to certain models. Regulatory frameworks across African markets will need to adapt. Pricing, network capacity and the pace at which more advanced services can be rolled out are all open issues. Satellite connectivity will not somehow erase the continent’s need for continued investment in terrestrial infrastructure.
Yet the DRC launch marks a genuine milestone. For decades, expanding mobile coverage essentially meant pouring more concrete and climbing more towers. Now there is another kind of tower in the equation—one that orbits the Earth every ninety minutes or so.
The bars on your phone may still disappear from time to time. The difference is that, increasingly, your phone will know where else to look.
