How to switch on Chrome’s new dark mode in Windows 10

Dark Mode is one of the most requested for feature on almost every platform you may come across. This has prompted developers make updates to apps and software, with the feature inclusive. The mode was primarily designed to change the standard background of apps to a darker color while reducing effects such as eye strain that is associated with white backgrounds. But the wider spread can not be explained, as its popularity span is beyond anticipation.

Google too has joined the wagon and is bringing the dark mode feature for Chrome users on Windows 10. This is in a new Chrome 74 official roll out for Windows, Mac, and Linux with automatic support for the Microsoft product. Basically, Chrome will automatically theme itself to match if you enable the dark mode on Windows 10, making it look more like the Incognito Mode menu bars.

The effect should be visible on the omnibox, the Bookmarks bar, the three-dot overflow menu, and the new tab page. The original white color scheme is retained on the Settings, Bookmarks, and other pages. To differentiate Chrome’s Dark Mode from incognito mode, there will now be a text badge next to the profile icon on the incognito.

Google is enabling the new dark mode on Windows, but is yet to fully switch it on for all Chrome users. But, if you don’t want to wait for the enabling, there’s a shortcut you can use to force dark mode as recommended by The Verge:

    • Find the shortcut you use to launch Chrome and open the properties
    • Add “–force-dark-mode” to the end of the target location (without quotes)
    • Launch Chrome and dark mode will be enabled. If you usually launch Chrome from a pinned taskbar item, you’ll need to right click the shortcut trick and then unpin / pin to taskbar again for this to hold

    What is in Chrome 74?

Chrome 74 doesn’t just bring in Dark mode, it brings on board some new accessibility options such as a motion reduction feature for users that are sickened by transition animation, parallax scrolling, and zooming effects. Chrome will now order websites and experiences to reduce these kinds of fluid animations.

The new Chrome version also restricts pages that are being closed from launching popups, and goes on to limit automatic downloads when visiting a new page with users having to manually click to achieve results.
