There are many ways to take a picture of yourself. But if you look carefully something is not right about your close up shots. Selfies can make our faces look weird and its changing the way we see ourselves and the choices we make about our unique facial features.

A lot of people think their noses look big in selfies, well am not trying to hit at the obvious tribes we have who are known for their wider nose features. This applies to all kinds of nose structures. In more advanced countries, there has been a spike of people going for nose jobs. According to a 2017 poll by AAFPRS.org, 55% facial plastic surgeons saw patients who wanted surgery to make them look better in selfies, that was an increase of 13% from 2016.

But those complaints are often due a distortion created by the distance between the smartphone camera and subject. You nose will look smaller 1.5 meters away from the camera when compared to a picture you have taken 0.3 meters away. This is about the distance that most people take selfies. You notice a huge difference is facial structures especially the nose.

How does this happen?

A team of researchers found that taking a photo from 0.3 meters away makes the base of the nose 30% larger and the tip 7% larger than they would from a further distance. From 1.5 meters away, your facial features are flattened and from 0.3 meters, your nose is exaggerated.

selfies vs distances taken So this means the parts of your face that are closer to the camera look than they actually are. It’s as if the nose is in the foreground and the ears are in the background instead of being on the same plane.

For now Long arms and selfie sticks are your best bet. But, phone camera software might one day be able to alter images with a treatment that simulates the effect of a distant camera.

Not all hope is lost

Researchers at Princeton University (Adobe research) created a tool  that can manipulate the distance between a camera and a subject  after a photo is taken. This means the software will be able to manipulate close-up selfies appear to be taken from a fluttering and natural distance.

So, don’t get disappointed if your nose always stands out to be the biggest among your friends in selfie shots, as a version of this upcoming technology could help design the right tool for a front facing camera one that will make our selfies feel more like us.
