Uganda is getting ready to produce its first oil. This is not just about drilling and pipes – it’s also about modern technology and a good internet connection. MTN Uganda is right in the middle of it, providing the networks and digital services that help the oil industry work safely and efficiently.
Recently, people from the Oil and Gas Convention in Kampala visited the Albertine region (around Hoima and the Tilenga oil project). What they saw was impressive. The area is changing fast. New roads, hotels, offices, and businesses are popping up. Heavy trucks and workers are everywhere as the region prepares for oil production.
The Tilenga project is one of the biggest parts of Uganda’s oil plan. In such a big and remote area, teams need to stay in touch all the time. That’s where MTN comes in.MTN has been building strong internet and phone coverage in the region. This helps workers:
- Talk to each other instantly
- Share information quickly
- Monitor equipment from far away
- Make fast decisions
A drilling engineer, Gilbert Natwijuka from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, explained it simply:
“We need steady, fast internet. We talk to support teams around the world. Decisions must be made in real time. Even one minute earlier can stop problems like a drill getting stuck.”MTN is more than just a phone company. Their Mobile Money service also helps local businesses, suppliers, and workers pay and get paid easily. This makes daily operations smoother and lets ordinary Ugandans take part in the oil business.
Sylvia Mulinge from MTN said:
“The future of oil and gas needs both physical roads and digital connections. We are committed to building the technology that supports businesses, communities, and Uganda’s growth.”Humphrey Asiimwe added:
“The Albertine region shows huge opportunity. The technology and local businesses growing around the oil will create lasting benefits for the country.”The visit showed that Uganda’s oil journey is about more than just oil. It’s about building roads, creating jobs, connecting communities, and using technology so that everyone can benefit.
As Uganda moves closer to its first oil, MTN is proving it is a true partner – helping the government and the industry with reliable technology that keeps everything running.
