    Who is Gift Shoko?

Gift Shoko is not your average banker. With a career spanning over 26 years in the banking industry, he brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Shoko’s journey in the world of finance is nothing short of impressive, having cut his teeth in various leadership positions across Southern and Eastern Africa.

Before stepping into the spotlight as the new Managing Director, Shoko had already been making waves within Equity Bank Uganda as its Executive Director. This internal promotion speaks volumes about the bank’s confidence in his abilities and vision for the future.

Shoko’s academic background is as diverse as it is impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Business Studies and Computer Science degree from the University of Zimbabwe, showcasing his early interest in the intersection of business and technology. Not content with just one degree, Shoko went on to earn a Masters in Business Administration, specializing in Banking and Finance, from CIMA in Nicosia, Cyprus.

But Shoko’s thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. He has accumulated several certifications in banking, finance, and leadership throughout his career. Perhaps most intriguingly, he is a certified Executive Coach and a certified Genos Emotional Intelligence Coach. These qualifications hint at a leader who values not just technical skills but also the softer, more human aspects of management.

A career defined by growth and innovation

Before joining the Equity Bank family, Shoko was making waves as the NCBA Group Director for Regional Business. In this role, he oversaw all banking subsidiaries in East Africa, demonstrating his ability to manage complex, multinational operations.

One of the highlights of Shoko’s career was his five-year stint as the Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank of Africa (Tanzania) Limited. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in steering the bank’s growth, leaving an indelible mark on Tanzania’s banking landscape.

Shoko’s journey in banking began at Nedbank Zimbabwe, where he participated in the Graduate Management Training program. This early experience laid the foundation for what would become a stellar career in finance. He quickly climbed the corporate ladder, taking on various senior management roles along the way.

One of the most impressive chapters in Shoko’s career was his time at Trust Holdings Limited (THL), a Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed diversified financial services group. Here, he served as both Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Executive Officer.

Under his leadership, THL underwent a successful reorganization and was re-listed on the stock exchange, showcasing Shoko’s ability to navigate complex financial landscapes and drive organizational change.

Throughout his career, Shoko has accumulated extensive experience in corporate governance. He has served on various boards across Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi, giving him a unique perspective on the financial landscape of Southern and Eastern Africa. This experience will undoubtedly prove invaluable in his new role at Equity Bank Uganda.

What next for Equity Bank Uganda?

The appointment of Gift Shoko as Managing Director comes at a crucial time for Equity Bank Uganda. The bank’s Board Chairman, Mr. Mark Ocitti, expressed confidence in Shoko’s ability to lead the bank into a new era of growth and innovation.

“Mr. Shoko brings with him a wealth of experience, proven track-record of leadership and expertise in banking, corporate strategy, and digital transformation,” Ocitti stated. “This aligns perfectly with our mission to continue delivering innovative and inclusive financial solutions to our customers.”
