You can edit their DMs within a specific time frame after sending them. This time limit is currently set to one hour. Additionally, you can make up to five edits to a single DM within that hour.

After editing a message, the recipient will see an “edited” label, indicating that changes were made. This transparency helps maintain trust in conversations.

How to edit your X DMs

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to edit your direct messages on X.

    • Navigate to your Direct Message inbox by swiping left or tapping the DM icon.
    • Find and open the conversation containing the message you wish to edit.
    • Scroll through the chat to find the specific message you want to edit.
    • Tap and hold the message until options appear. Select the Edit option from the menu.
    • Modify the text as needed. You can add, delete, or rearrange the content of your message.
    • Once you are satisfied with your edits, confirm by tapping the Update button.
    • Recipients can click on the edited message to view its previous versions, ensuring they are aware of what has changed.

Limitations of the DM edit feature

While the edit feature is a significant improvement, there are some limitations to be aware of.

You must edit your message within one hour of sending it. Edits can only be made from the device from which the original message was sent. For example, if you sent a DM from the X app on your iPhone, you must use the same app to edit the message.

Plus, all participants in the conversation can see that a message has been edited, which may affect how your message is perceived.
