Airtel Uganda has become the first telecom firm in Uganda to launch eSIM cards. With this SIM-less service, a user can for example be on the MTN network without the need for a physical -SIM register for a virtual one from Airtel. This comes with a limitation of the devices that support the service.

In East Africa for example, Safaricom Kenya, Airtel Tanzania, Airtel Kenya, and other carriers already support eSIM service. A few weeks back, the Airtel Group MD announced that Airtel Uganda will soon support this technology once the Ugandan Communications Commission(UCC)– the regulator completed final approvals. This has finally come to fruition.
How to get the Airtel Uganda SIM-less eSIM card
Airtel Uganda’s eSIM supports 2G, 3G, and 4G-LTE technology. Customers who wish to switch their current physical SIM cards to eSIMs will need a compatible device by dialing *#06#, obtaining the required QR code, and a valid National ID, and being guided through a SIM Swap process by an Airtel service personnel.
An eSIM is more secure than a physical SIM since it cannot be removed from a phone by thieves when it has been stolen. They also eliminate the need to obtain, carry, and swap physical SIM cards, or wait in long queues. This was my exact experience when I recently traveled to Seychelles, Dubai, and Turkey. I would simply go online and buy an eSIM before I set off to my next destination and by the time I land I am already connected to a local network. As shown below, my Samsung S23 Ultra was able to utilize up to three eSIM cards for each of these countries I traveled to.
Over 400 carriers support eSIM technology in 100 markets around the world. Most offer prepaid SIM-less data plans for long-term use in countries around the world offering both limited and unlimited data packages depending on the online deal.
