Uganda’s youngest telecom seems to be taking shape, it was recently granted a National Telecommunication Operator (NTO) license by UCC, making the company the Third National Operator. The carrier has operated in Uganda since 2008 and got the NTO license on March 24, 2021.

Want to earn some extra money with your own business, here is what one needs and how one can become a sim card agent for Lycamobile Uganda.
Tangerine Limited provides the services to the agents as an employee under their licensed brand Lycamobile or Lyca. Lycamobile and Lyca are trading names used under license by Tangerine Ltd.
The chain of the registration for new Lyca agents (resellers/retailers) is authorized to be done by the fully registered aggregator companies by Lycamobile to register distributing parties/companies which then registers/establishes as many serious retail shops as possible.
In order to sell airtel or data for Lycamobile Uganda, you have to sign some agreements with the company’s third-party aggregator company called Mugehcom Technologies. The agreement will require the potential agents to submit their personal information, identification documents, and business/company details including attaching copies of proof of registration.
Agents are provided with all the necessary equipment(s) to their registered account holders/companies; which among others may include: The VPN SIM Card (used for registering customers’ details), the stock/sim cards, the Mantra (Finger Print scanner), MIFIs (WIFI routers/modems), login account & Password, The Agent’s Application (APP) apk, Branding (where necessary), Airtime (E-Top Ups), Data (E-vouchers), The Commission/Payments, and all the required assistance in line with delivering their services as agents.
Costs and commission
For now, VPN sim cards are free of charge, however, in case an Agent loses it or gets stolen or faulty, its replacement/sim swap can be very expensive and goes up to UGX 50,000. So agents are advised to always be keen and careful with it to avoid such payments. Other fees that will be incurred include;
- A mantra – fingerprint scanner is a must for all new agents who will buy it at a cost of UGX 250,000 for the registered agents only and UGX 300,000 for none agents.
- A sim card (for the final user) is at UGX 10,000 at purchase, and for replacement/simswap is at UGX 2,000. However, there is commission on each of the simcards according to the package/number of simcards taken by the agents for sale:
- As for now until mobile money is launched lycamobile says that, all agents will be given commission/payments on only simcards, which will be in form of extra simcards because; they assume that if your commission UGX 100,000, and they instead give it to you in form of simcards (10), then Agents will sell each card at UGX 15,000-200,000 thus making them earn UGX 150,000-200,000 as their indirect commission.
- Agents are also given commission according to how many simcards they take for sale and in which package.
All the packages available for Lycamobile Agents
Package 1
This is designed to enable everyone startup an agency to boost their income and or test Lycamobile agency work. Each time an agent purchases/takes sim cards from 10-49 sim cards, THEY DON’T GET ANY COMMISSION for that package.
The first package (package 1) was designed to support young and financially unwell agents to enable them to register at cheaper requirements but on condition that they are not given a commission, rather encouraged to work hard to reach package 2 in order to start earning a commission.
Package 2
According to Lycamobile, this package is designed to encourage or boost all hardworking and interested agents with commission. Each time an agent purchases sim cards from 50-99 sim cards, THEY GET A COMMISSION OF 20% (UGX 2,000) on each sim card. Package 2 is for every hard worker in need of immediate stock and can’t afford package 3.
Package 3
This is the Full Package for Agents and has the actual Required Condition for All Agents. Each time an agent purchases/takes sim cards from 100 sim cards – onwards, THEY GET A COMMISSION OF 20% (UGX 2,500). This can be increased anytime according to the agent’s performance on each sim card.
- Package 3 is the actual registration required stock for all agents. Besides commission, this comes with benefits such as continuous invoices for each purchase, each sale you make and all the necessary notifications from Lycamobile. This benefit is not available for package 1 & 2.
- All Businesses/companies plus interested personal agents are advised to take up this package (package 3) to enable them monitor transactions within their businesses/companies.
For trust and ease of tracking purposes, Lycamobile advises potential agents to purchase receipt books as well to give to their customers for each product sold.
Branding, e.g., T-shirts, Umbrellas, Tables, Kiosks, etc. are also available for them.
For all the mentioned packages above, it should be noted that agents can as well be given a 4G smartphone for use as an inclusive but at an increased price.
e.g package 1 costs between UGX 300,000 to UGX 490,000 without the phone but with the phone, it would be UGX 700,000 – 900,000 with the phone included.
