It’s been a few days since the government of Uganda introduced the new 12% Excise Duty on internet data. Airtel Uganda has come out to announce an increment on its fixed internet services and will only apply to Airtel Business rates. It is still unclear whether the mobile bundles will be hiked in the near future.
All Airtel Uganda customers using the business shared plan will now have to part with UGX 392,000 an increment from the previous UGX 350,000 it was charging for a 5 Mbps plan. For dedicated internet and data plans, there will be an additional 12% excise tax based on case-by-case pricing that will be applicable. But how will this increment look like?

The 2 Mbps dedicated internet connection
This is a platinum bundle that guarantees speeds of 2Mbps 24/7 throughout the subscription period. This was at UGX 650,000 per month and after the tax is applied it will cost UGX 728,000. This excludes the UGX 200,000 installation fee.
The 3 Mbps dedicated internet connection
Unlike the shared and 2 Mbps bundle, Airtel Uganda’s microwave installation equipment cost for this bundle goes for UGX 375,000 and this is a one-time payment. This bundle guarantees customers to enjoy 3 Mbps speeds 24/7 at a cost of UGX 870,000 per month and now will increase up to UGX 974,400.
MTN Uganda and Smile Communications remain the only telecom firms that have not adjusted their data bundle fees for mobile data. Lycamobile and Roke have already implemented the tax on their data bundle.
