Telecom companies using SEACOM subsea cable in Uganda to experience 19 days of internet downtime

The provisional marine repair window is nineteen (19) days and will commence from 1st March 2021 to 19th March 2021, a period of which remains dependent upon weather and other external factors within the vicinity of the marine repair operations.

In an email that Techjaja was privy to the SEACOM said; “Once the repair commences, transmission services with linear traffic routing from South and East Africa towards Europe and India will be affected for 11 days during the cable repair operations.” Techjaja has reached out to the offices in South Africa who confirmed the email to be accurate.

For the users, there is no need to panic, as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with protected traffic, and IP/MPLS customers will have their traffic re-routed via alternative paths but could experience altered latency the company has warned. This means that if your ISP doesn’t have a robust back-up with other sea cable providers, expect a reduction in internet speeds.

“Activity Window: Planned Event Start time: 00:01GMT/1st March 2021 Planned Event End time: 23:59GMT/19th March 2021 Expected Downtime: 11 days We have opened TT no (SEACOMSUPPORT-146763) for your reference. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us,” the email read in part.
