Huawei confirms Mate 30 to launch on September 19th

Despite all the on going blacklist issues by the US govt, Huawei has confirmed the launch date for its next flagship the Mate 30 series phones. In a short teaser video posted to Twitter, the company says that the upcoming flagship series will be unveiled in Munich, Germany on September 19th. The tagline for the event is “Rethink Possibilities.”

The company’s Rethink possibilities of its Mate 30 phones — is a good headline for its upcoming Mate 30 flagship devices given that they won’t be allowed to ship with core Google services on board. In our review of the Mate 20 Pro last year it has the best phone camera one can get, of course before the P30 pro.

We expect to Mate series to come with great hardware and on software aside, we expect it to run the up coming EMUI 10 on top of Android 10. It should make use of the Kirin 990 processor, which Huawei is set to announce this week at the IFA trade show in Berlin. Unverified leaks indicate that the Mate 30 Pro will feature a large circular quad-camera module and a “waterfall” display with extreme curved edges as was leaked sometime ago.

The GSM that the Mate 30 won’t have

Google Mobile Services (GMS) is a suite of Google-branded applications and cloud-based services. Also, the GMS is not a part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or simply called the open-source version of Android. Therefore, Android smartphone manufactures needs to get a license from Google to legally install GMS on their Android devices, the Mate 30 may not have these apps.

Applications that are part of GMS

The GMS consist of two parts – a popular bundle and an additional bundle package. To gain a license for GMS, a popular bundle package needs to be pre-installed by Android device manufacturers, usually called pre-loaded apps and these are the apps most fear may not come with the Mate 30 series.

Popular bundled GMS application package includes:

    • Google Search
    • Google Chrome
    • Youtube
    • Google Play Store

Other GMS bundle application package includes:

    • Google Drive
    • Gmail
    • Google Duo
    • Google Maps
    • Google Photos
    • Google Play Music

By using all of these applications the smartphone manufacturer can create a seamless experience across various devices for these particular applications.

Huawei has already been building out its own Play Store alternative, and is reportedly working on a mapping service API for third-party developers. Huawei also recently revealed its own operating system, HarmonyOS, but has downplayed its potential as an Android replacement for smartphones including the the Mate 30 series .
