    Google Launches ‘Impact of Internet On Africa’

    Google Nigeria in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication Technology has launched a new study, “Impact of the Internet in Africa” to evaluate the nation’s ICT adoption.The study launched in at the commencement of the 3-day Google Share Your Nigerian Content (SYNC) 2013 conference in Abuja was undertaken by Dalberg across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal in April 2013 to examine the internet’s impact and its potential for social and economic development in Nigeria while recommending ways to boosting content creation and distribution.

    In her remarks, Google Nigeria Policy Manager, Titi Akinsanmi explained that the launching of the report stems from the need to provide more information on how policy makers and investors should capitalise on the potentials presented by the internet while appreciating its rising adoption level. “It specifies the need for government to continue to play the lead role as visionaries and first  adopters of new technologies”, she added.

    Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson said it was a   step towards promoting the full adoption of ICT in Nigeria while enhancing the current national broadband plan being processed by the
    ministry to create better internet adoption in the nation’s capital. The broad band plan is also expected to cover all state capitals by the year 2017, the minister said.
