Lenovo could bring its Z6 Pro phone with a 100 MP camera sensor

At the Mobile World Congress that was held this past February, a number of announcements was made and among these was Lenovo, who made mention of the Z6 Pro device that would come with 5G support and a HyperVision camera on its rear with capability ‘to record Hyper Videos’.

The device has not yet launched, and it would be hard to define what HyperVision meant in that case; but the company’s Vice President Chang Cheng did a tease on Weibo with a hashtag for a smartphone which translates into 100MP.

The post shared consist of a hashtag ‘亿级像素’ which translates into ‘billion level pixels’ or roughly ‘100 million pixels’ as scribes have been quick to translate it into.

The Lenovo Z6 Pro is expected to launch sometime in June, and is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 855 and is likely to feature 12 GB of RAM.

Is a 100 MP camera possible on a smartphone?

In a recent interview, Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Product Management Judd Heape suggested a possibility of phones with 64MP and ‘even 100MP cameras’ this 2019.

We have already seen the Xiaomi Mi 9, Huawei Nova 4, and Redmi Note 7 Pro with 48MP main cameras while the vivo V15 Pro has a 48MP main and 32MP selfie camera.

Most of the current Snapdragon chipsets like the 660, 670, 675, 710, 845, and 855 have support for resolutions of up to 192MP, but there is a must-need to disable some features like multi-frame noise reduction and zero shutter lag.

This implies that instead of capturing a series of photos to combine them into a cleaner single image, the sensors instead capture a single high-megapixel image and then use pixel binning to create a lower-resolution one.

For instance, the current 48MP phones combine 4 pixels into one for a resulting 12MP shot. It means that the 64MP cameras will create binned 16MP images, and eventually the 100MP camera will instead create binned 25MP images.
