    Foursquare to power Windows Phone 8.1 ‘Cortana’ personal assistant

    It’s been rumored that Microsoft will launch a “siri” like personal digital Assistant in the next version of Windows Phone. So the company has invested over $15 million in Foursquare according to Bloomberg News reports in order to produce a product in the coming months. The deal is solely a location based data and service that will feature in Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update. Microsoft’s personal assistant in Windows Phone 8.1 also know as “Cortana” (a game Halo Character) is currently under testing. Foursquare’s data will help Cortana push out tips, discounts, and suggestions based on location.

    Further reports from Bloomberg News reveal that that Foursquare’s data will be used in future Windows Phone software. According to Microsoft’s Serafin

    “We’re building some contextually aware experiences to power some upcoming products in Windows Phone. This will be for anywhere you get a Bing-powered experience.”

    The voice-activated personal assistant, Cortana will work in Windows Phone 8.1 is largely focused on context, rules, and signals. Data from alarms, calendar, weather apps, calls, and even whether a device is charging, can all be fed into the service to provide notifications and context around Windows Phone use

    The feature is expected to debut in April in  Windows Phone 8.1. The company will also hold its own Mobile World Congress press event on February 23rd.
