After the previous last year quarter registering a drop in mobile money usage, the up time trend of mobile based financial in Uganda is most likely to be on the rise after MTN Uganda recently opened up its Mobile Money platform to send and receive money across all networks. Utilizing this option is something worth trying out at a time when the mobile money tax is only applicable on withdraws.
Given that all telcos have different Mobile Money rates depending on the transaction tiers, charges seem to be the same across all off-net networks but depending on the transaction range with this new Interoperability change. Step 1: Dial *185# and choose Send money
Step 2: Enter phone number and amount on next step
Step 3: Enter amount and authenticate pin to send mone
With MTN’s open MoMo service partially shutting the previous singular telco boundaries, we expect to see a dual launch of such an open service from leading competitors like Airtel and Africell in response.
