As Uganda celebrated her 56th independence towards the end of last year, the President commissioned a set of CCTV cameras that had been installed across the city and its suburbs to curb crime.
With the rate at which criminals prevailed without fear of being caught typically at its top, the launch of the cameras was to prove whether the development was worth investing in or not.
These cameras were termed to have several functions embedded to both their raised boards and the fiber supported control centers. Among these include face and number plates recognition technologies, night vision, Global Positioning System (GPS), and automatic cleaning system.
As 2018 rolled over to usher in the new year, the Uganda Police Force utilized the installations to trace and arrest a 17 year old Essau Nduhukire, caught on camera stealing from passengers stuck in traffic jam at Shoprite along Entebbe road.
In the video that Uganda Police shared on their Facebook page, the suspect is seen moving from the side of Shoprite and to then snatch a phone from a passenger in a taxi before disappearing.
In his End of year address to the nation, President Museveni assured the citizens that criminality will be put to halt in this year, and assured Ugandans of security of both people and property through out.
The police force as well emphasized that more officers will be deployed within the localities to boost security.
A total of over 400 cameras were installed in Nateete, Rubaga, Lugala, Kabowa, Kawaala, Lungujja and Kasubi areas with Nateete police station currently acting as the temporary national command centre.
Police states that a total of 5,552 CCTV cameras will be installed in various places around the country with the majority to be installed in Kampala Metropolitan districts of Wakiso, Kampala and Mukono – accounting for 3233 cameras on 1248 sites.
