Most apps such as Twitter have dark mode feature which some part of people have adopted to. YouTube Dark mode gives a black background facilitating less brightness and contrast on your device hence decreasing on eye straining and less sleep disruption when using these apps in the evening.
The theme also contributes to improvement of your battery life with its dull coloured interface.
YouTube made a redesign of the site about 1 year ago giving the site a new look and adding features such as the dark mode.
Most YouTube app upgrades this year brought the redesign of the site to mobiles devices that is tablets and smart phones showing clear steps on how one could turn on the YouTube dark mode that is, Open YouTube, Go to the Profile icon to your top right corner, access settings and you will find a Dark mode theme from where you can turn it on and off.
When it comes to PCs where most people access the site browsers, some browsers did not upgrade to the new YouTube design or some users did not realise the upgrade, so they could not add utilise these features.
We therefore need to upgrade to the new YouTube for browsers with the classic design before we use the dark mode. For upgraded designs we shall start from Step 2.

Step1: How to upgrade to new design.
Go to the search tab in your browser and type www.youtube.com/new. A page ushering you to the new design will loaded to confirm your transition to the new YouTube design as shown below.
Step 2: Adding Dark Theme Mode.
After the upgrade, click on the profile icon at the top right-hand corner of the page and from the drop-down menu displayed, you will see can turn the dark mode on and off.
The dark mode will only be activated for that particular browser meaning you will have to do it for each browser you use to access YouTube on your PC.
YouTube completely phased out the feature that would link you back to the classic design earlier this year so after the upgrade you cannot revert to it anymore.
