Will Electric cars hit the streets of Kampala soon?

EV in Uganda

Electric cars in  Uganda have been evidenced with the Kira EV car series that currently has its Kayoola bus “innovation” representing the local innovators on fuel-engine dominated routes. Although our roads may not be ready for Tesla grade vehicles yet, the electric cars dream could be near than we thought! after a roll out of 2 Wheel bikes in Kampala at a time when fuel prices are hitting high highs.

IN 2011, the Kiira motor series became the talk of Kampala when Makerere students unveiled the Kiira EV smack and Kayoola bus concepts. However, the reliable fate of these electric vehicles has shaped the destiny of Uganda’s monopolic electric cars industry. In 2016, the Kiira EV smack got an upgrade its its Sedan shape closely comparable to the Tesla Model 3, little did we know the car will be fully available by 2020.

While Kiira EV cars are fully manufactured in Uganda with both Fuel and electric capabilities. The hybrid battery powered features will truly redefine our transport system with a remarkable price tag of $25,000 for a brand new Sedan. Additionally, their will be no need for shipped electric stations, but instead rely on solar powered batteries for real time recharges.

As per the Kiira Ev archives, the Kayoola bus will kickstart an electric cars journey in Uganda by 2019 when the bus will start making trips in Uganda with full operations of up to 80 km equivalent to a full day trip between Kampala-Entebbe-Kampala for basic recharges. By the time, Kiira’s Kayoola bus hits the streets of Kampala, electric manufacturers might breed from the silent fuel consumption vacuum to launch successful operations in Uganda.

By 2019, if the Kayoola bus hits the streets of Kampala, the sedan EV Smack will be next on the list to achieve this ultimate goal. Additionally, the potential market for these cars is mainly streamed to the shooting high fuel prices and since URA is not planning to lift its ban on uch older cars, the Ugandan made EV cars could be the best option at a relatively cheaper price compared to latest models of imported vehicles in the country. For instance, the Kiira EV smack costs $25,000 lower than CMC’s 2018 Ford Everest. Nonetheless, should you tuck your 5 year plans with an electric vehicle? Yes, electric cars in Uganda are just around the corner and might hit Kampala streets sooner than we expect 2020 if external manufacturers join the Kiira EV wagon making electric automotives more available.
