If you are the kind that loves playing your music while on the move, Google Maps is bringing the love much closer. Starting this week, Google is rolling out a new feature update in a commute tab, as well as in-app music support.
The Commute tab, first released in a limited rollout in early September, will be available to users on Android and iOS. Google says that this new feature is designed to help you “take control over your commute.”
In it, Google Maps will provide live data on traffic to help you best manage your daily trip to work. This information includes accounts of accidents or heavy traffic and a provision for alternate routes. Android users will have notifications on these updates sent to their device before getting caught in the delay.
There is also something new for users who use mixed transportation. For instance, if you both drive in a personal vehicle and take public transit, Google Maps will work out the timing and display the data for each leg of the trip “including departure times for buses and trains”.
Additionally, Google Maps is adding direct integration with popular music services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Play Music. These will all be available directly within Google Maps’ navigation screen so that you can control your tunes and podcasts directly.
The new commute features will start rolling out globally on Android and iOS this week. All you need to do is update your app from the Play Store or App Store to get started.
