Samsung announces the ‘Unbreakable’ display panel

What if I told you the engineers at Samsung get some of their inspiration from the Bible? You wouldn’t believe me. Right? Anyways, If you don’t mind flipping through a few pages of The Holy Book, find your way to Isaiah 54:17. “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” That’s exactly what Samsung whispered in the ear of the Samsung unbreakable display during fabrication.

Smartphone displays have been evolving in terms of size, resolution, aspect ratios and other smarts. We’ve seen Infinity displays, curved screens, dual-screens, whatever-you-can-remember screens. We’ve seen them all. However, sheer strength of the display has been a problem for the industry for as long as it has lived. Even the mighty Gorilla Corning glass isn’t too strong to survive major falls. Well, not even Thor’s hammer is that strong (you should watch Thor Ragnarök if you haven’t).

But that might all be past us now. The dawn of the Unbreakable display has arrived, and its coming from Samsung. The South Korean Tech giant has announced that it has developed a candidly “unbreakable” display panel. This came after receiving certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to verify the claim. Finally!

    The Unbreakable Display

An Unbreakable Display may seem beyond the bounds of possibility, but not to Samsung. The company continues to imprint its name in the books of History with formidable technological innovations.

The new Unbreakable display features flexible OLED just like many other modern phones in Samsung’s portfolio. However, the Unbreakable Display has an underlying layer that adheres securely to the panel, designed to not give out with repeated impact.

For a long time, Phone makers have been using synthetic sapphire on smartphone displays to make them hard to break. Well, just hard, but they still broke. This is because Sapphire material is hard, but brittle. Samsung has opted for fortified plastic rather than glass for the Unbreakable Display.

Consequently, this makes it flexible during impact. Samsung’s panel is capable of surviving military-grade durability tests without damage.

In UL’s testing, the display panel was subjected to 26 successive 4-foot drops without a scar of battle. The display also continued working in extreme temperatures. Samsung claimed that the panel also survived 6 foot drops, well above the current standard test, without issue.

The Samsung Unbreakable Display in consumer hands?

Samsung unbreakable display may not feature in the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 and S10. However, Samsung hinted that the unbreakable display will not only feature on phones, but also many other products. Right now we have to wait, and maybe watch the video below to see the display in action.
