Two atom thick Glass: New Ultra-thin glass, now recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records

Well, what do we have here, seems there is a new record to grace the GBWR (Guinness Book of World Records) come 2014, it’s the world’s thinnest sheet of glass which is  just two atoms thick. This was an accidental discovery by scientists at Cornell University and Germany’s University of Ulm.  It was discovered as they were working to produce pure graphite,  one of the crystalline forms of carbon, alongside diamond, graphite, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes. During the research, one of the participants noticed a formation of  a thick, viscous matter, but closer analysis revealed a glass layer composed of silicon and oxygen. To simply put it, a major discovery by luck.

And despite the glass pane’sbarely-their size, it’s providing scientists with a wealth of new insight on the core structure of glass. Using electron microscopy, they’ve produced a picture we see above revealing the precise arrangement of atoms in glass, another first according to David A. Muller (whose lab made the discovery). As for what implications this two-dimensional glass holds for the real world, experts say it could be one day be used in transistors and ultimately help speed up processing in computers and Smartphones. The 2014 edition Guinness book, will reflect new thin glass record.
