Finally, everyone Who had been held back by the tough conditions that were put by UCC on SIM card replacement can breathe a triumphant sigh of relief as the big yellow company announced the services centers where you can replace your lost or damaged SIM card
UCC had suspended issuance of new SIM cards and replacement as it sought for better means of curbing the cyber crimes that were on the rise. This led to a long and painful wait as people whose needed the service were hit by extremely long procedures and tough conditions under which telecoms could replace SIM cards. New hope shone upon all those on the SIM card replacement waiting list when NIRA handed over SIM card reading machines to Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). The tale is now getting a happy ending.
MTN Uganda has announced that SIM Card replacement is now available at selected MTN service centers which are equipped with the National ID verification & Bio-metric systems. We are yet to ascertain if the move for making SIM card replacement available on only a few selected centers is a directive by the commission, or limited number of scanners.
To replace your MTN SIM card, you have to present an original National Identity Card (for Ugandans) or a passport (for foreigners) and a letter of loss of SIM card from the Police to any of the MTN service centers mentioned below.

Most importantly, SIM card replacement can only be done by the SIM card owner and a representative. If you have the above mentioned documentation, your SIM card will be replaced at only UGX 1,500. The service centers are still limited to the above but maybe MTN will soon bring SIM card replacement closer to you. But while we wait, the above branches that are scattered around Uganda can be pretty much accessible no matter which part of Uganda you reside.
