The UEFA Champions League is one of the premier soccer tournaments across the globe drawings fans not only in massive stadias but millions watching the tourney through live TV and stream over the Internet. DSTV through its SuperSport brand has renewed the exclusive rights to broadcast Champions League as it is commonly known for more three years in Africa.

The renewed arrangement is effective starting with the 2018/2019 season. SuperSport rights include television, mobile and internet rights across sub-saharan Africa. This means users will be able to supplement live tv with viewing on their mobile devices through apps and across the web through SuperSport channels and DSTV apps like DSTV Now.

The hold on such premium content by DSTV and its affiliate channels have seen the paytv player become the preferred consumer choice when it comes to paytv service across sub-saharan Africa while competitors look on.

Either it outbids them or they just can’t match its financial muscle and leverage of having close to 12 Million subscribers divided between its Direct-To-Home service DSTV and its budget Digital Terrestrial Transmission service GOtv spread across Africa.(Meanwhile GOtv recently launched the GOtv Max bouquet that allows you to watch even another premium soccer league in the Spanish La Liga)

It is unknown how much SuperSport paid for the rights but they normally cost an arm and leg to secure. In other words they are very expensive to buy.  Supersport continues its winning streak, having held the same rights the previous season for the region in question.
