Netflix subscribers will watch Queen of Katwe the moment its released

Netflix and Disney have just concluded mega deal negotiations that have lasted for four years. Netflix will be allowed to stream all Disney films starting in September, just in time for the much anticipated Ugandan based movie Queen of Katwe. The deal also includes Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm titles — in the same window that they’d typically be made available to other services like HBO. All Disney films released theatrically in 2016 and beyond are included in the agreement, for which Netflix is reportedly paying hundreds of millions per year.

Queen of Katwe is a Disney production colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. This is a huge deal for Netflix as it gives them Disney exclusivity. The company has been quick to gloat about this in a new blog post meant to stir excitement about new movies and shows that’ll be hitting later this year. In the blog post they say; “From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar,” said Ted Sarandos, the company’s content boss. I guess this may save some a trip the cinema to catch up with Queen of Katwe as the movie will be released by 23rd September 2016.
