Social media sites switched back on in Uganda

After a 3-day social media black out in Uganda, it seems the government has finally ordered the Telecos to switch Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp back on. Mobile subscribers were by passing the social media censor by using VPN apps like TrustZone VPN which registered over 500,000 VPN app installs from Uganda which crashed their servers at some point.

On the 18th of this month, the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) directed all carriers to switch off popular social networking websites citing security concerns.

We’re glad to report that Africell, MTN and Airtel are all back on, and subscribers can now fore-go using VPN apps. However, savvy users who want to continue accessing US restricted apps and programs on Netflix can continue to use VPNs to by-pass these geographical restrictions.
