Microsoft ‘surprised’ by Beijing’s decision but will still continue selling Windows 7 in China

This week, China banned Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system from all it’s government computers, which caught Microsoft off guard and by surprise. The ban was due to the use of energy-efficient technology, but China’s state-run Xinhua news agency yesterday reported that the move was motivated by several  security concerns that arose due to Microsoft ended support for Windows XP. The report further says that, the majority of Chinese government computers still run Windows XP, an operating system still used by over 70% of the Chinese market.

According to an email set to the verge,a Microsoft spokesperson said the company was “surprised” to see its new operating system banned from China, and that it will continue to sell Windows 7 to government clients until a resolution is reached.
