    Ugandan Banks are still using old versions of Windows

    ATMWith the recent support closure for Windows XP by Microsoft, most commercial an enterprise users are expected to be jumping ship to Windows 7 or 8. According to the Observer Most banks have not changed their operating systems to the latest Microsoft OS, which could pose a big threat and expose  the banks to computer-generated attacks.

    The Microsoft Uganda manager Dennis Kahindi told journalists early this week that only three banks out of the 26 in the country had upgraded. he also noted that most banks’ ATMs and networks were installed ten years ago with windows XP and they have since not changed. In such a mode of operation, the banks will be susceptible to computer fraud risks.

    Very many banks and telecom companies in Uganda are losing a lot of money in cyber fraud.

    The National Information Technology Authority Uganda (Nita-U) announced a banking and ICT security summit slated for April 25. The annual east African banking and ICT summit will discuss solutions to the banking fraud, IT security threats, risks, and regulations, according to Nita-Uganda.

    Nita-U Executive Director James Saaka, said that banks lose between $1m to $10m (about Shs 26bn) annually in cyber fraud. Last year, government formed the National Cert, a response team to advise the public on cyber attacks.
