Safaricom, already a dominant player in the Kenyan telecom market, ventured into Ethiopia last year, seeking to tap into the vast potential offered by the populous East African country.

    Vanhelleputte’s Impressive Track Record

Wim Vanhelleputte brings a wealth of expertise to his new role, having held significant positions within the African telecom industry. Prior to joining Safaricom, he served as the CEO of MTN Uganda, where he played a pivotal role in driving growth and innovation.

His experience also includes executive positions at Airtel DRC and Bharti Airtel Limited, where he oversaw strategic business units across multiple African countries.

In tandem with Vanhelleputte’s departure, MTN Group has announced the appointment of Stephen Blewett as the Operations Executive: Markets. Blewett will succeed Vanhelleputte and assume executive responsibility for several markets, including Liberia, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, and Congo Brazzaville.

    Safaricom’s Growth Objectives in Ethiopia

As Safaricom expands its operations in Ethiopia, Vanhelleputte will be tasked with delivering the company’s ambitious growth targets in this emerging market. In addition to acquiring new subscribers, the company is set to introduce its highly successful M-Pesa financial services, following the acquisition of a financial license in May.

M-Pesa has revolutionized financial inclusion and mobile payments in Kenya, and Safaricom aims to replicate its success in Ethiopia.
