Where do deleted smartphone photos go?

The next time you’re in Entebbe at a  beach, write a message in the sand, then wipe it away with your hand. Where did the message go? All the sand is still there, but there is no way to get what you wrote back.

Well, photos on your phones are a little like the message you wrote in the sand on the beach. They are represented by patterns of electric charge in a memory chip. When you delete a photo/message from your phone, they don’t just disappear, the place that once stored that particular photo is marked as unused or free space. This space will eventually be overwritten by some other data you put on the phone.

This is why it is often possible to recover photos deleted from your phone or PC when you accidentally delete them. In this article, we are going to show where the photos go so you can restore them back to your gallery in case you make such a mistake.

On iPhone and iPad photos app

When using an iPhone or iPad, the moment you select the photo you want to delete and tap on the trash can icon, you will see a confirmation alert message asking you to confirm with delete and cancel option. When you choose to delete, a notice will warn you that the photo will be deleted from all of your devices.

Your photo will disappear from your view the but actually in real sense, it is not truly gone.

Instead, the image is sent to the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app where it remains for 30 days. During that time you can return a photo from the recently deleted album to your phone. You can as well choose to delete it permanently.

To find the Recently Deleted album, open the Photos app, then tap Albums in the bottom menu and the Recently Deleted album.

    On Google photos

When you delete a photo from your phone gallery, it shouldn’t be deleted on Google Photos if your phone is connected to the internet and everything is in sync. On most recent Android phones, Google photos are the default app to view photos so in case you delete a photo from your phone, they stick around in the Bin folder before they are permanently removed from your account.

You can also decide to permanently delete the photo(s) if you do not want to wait 60 days for them to disappear.

To find photos you have deleted, open the Photos app and click on the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

Tap Bin to see the photos you have deleted from Google Photos within the past 60 days.

Choose photos you want to either delete or restore. Then tap the trash can or the circle arrow in the upper right corner of the screen to delete or restore the chosen photos.
