What is Facebook pay, you ask? Well, it is the underlying payment platform powering payments on Facebook’s host of apps that include Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and Messenger. Even the recently launched Whatsapp payments are supported by Facebook Pay.
How Does It Work?
Facebook Pay works within Facebook lines of apps including Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp, and Instagram instead of a standalone app. Users only have to add their account information or preferred payment option, that being cards or PayPal and you’re good to go. Intra-transactions between individuals attract no fees but merchants are charged for accepting payments
How to Add Facebook Pay to one’s Facebook Account?
For any Facebook app available, lets say Messenger, Go to Messenger>Settings>Facebook Pay and then add your preferred payment method to complete the payment setup.
If one’s payment methods are already on Facebook’s file, the payment methods will be available to use by Facebook Pay right away.
Who Accepts Facebook Pay
A host of services accept it especially those taking advantage of its marketplace on top of donations, and even peer-to-peer payments amongst friends on Facebook’s host of apps. Out-side the Facebook ecosystem is a different story altogether.

The service also keeps track of one’s transaction history that you’re able to refer to historical transactions should the need arise, proper planning among others. This transaction history can still be accessed through multiple Facebook apps.
What About Security?
The service also allows biometric authentication using fingerprints & facial recognition plus personalized PINs to protect the users against fraud and unauthorised payments.
Facebook also re-asserts that card and PayPal info is stored separately from one’s data account and not shared with sellers, buyers, and merchants for protection, on top of an anti-fraud system plus customer support.
Availability of Facebook Pay
It is available in select countries and isn’t offered across all its line of apps. In Africa, it is available in Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Côte D’ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, South Africa and Tunisia on only the main Facebook app. Others can check for availability here.
