What is Doze Mode and how can you use it to save Android battery life?

Introduced in Android 6.0, Google introduced two power-saving features that extend battery life for users by managing how apps behave when a device is not connected to a power source. Doze Mode and App Standby.

Have you ever left your phone at say 80 percent, go to sleep only to wake up and battery life has reduced to say 60 percent in the morning? Well these are the issues that Doze Mode and Standby addresses.

Doze Mode reduces battery consumption by deferring background processes and network activity for apps when the device is unused for long periods of time. App Standby defers background network activity for apps with which the user has not recently interacted.

In essence, Doze Mode makes sure that the apps in your phone aren’t using battery power when you’re not using your phone. There’s nothing you have to do — Doze Mode automatically kicks in when your phone has been unplugged and motionless for a certain length of time. At that point, the software will deny certain apps any access to the network to conserve data usage and also battery life. When Doze Mode is kicked in, the processing jobs (such as checking for updates or for news) are halted, except for periodic moments when they are allowed to access the network for updates and syncs.

So this means, when your phone isn’t being used, many of your apps get to take a nap until you need them again.

However, you may not want all your apps to experience Doze Mode. You might miss out on that WhatsApp or email notification you have been waiting for. Also, work apps like Skype or Slack that are constantly updating, you may want them to continue working even when you’re not using the phone. Here’s how you do that: Please note that these settings are based on stock Android settings menu and your device makers may change accordingly.

    • Go to your phone’s settings and select “Apps & Notifications.” or “Battery Settings”
    • Scroll down and select “Advanced” > “Special app access” > “Battery optimization.”
    • You’ll see a list of all the apps that are not optimized for Doze mode. Tap on the “Not optimized” button on top and choose “All apps.”
    • Most (but not all) of your apps will be labeled “Optimizing battery use.” You can go down this list of apps and choose any app that you want to exempt from Doze Mode. When you see one that you want to exempt, tap on the name of the app and then select “Don’t optimize.”
