VoLTE: Airtel Uganda Introduces High-Quality Calls

Voice over LTE on its 5G

Voice calling is one of the most essential services that mobile operators provide to their customers. However, not all voice calls are created equal. Depending on the network technology and the device used, voice calls can vary in quality, clarity, and reliability. That’s why Airtel Uganda, has today launched introduced VoLTE (Voice over LTE) on its 5G-Ready Network.

In March 2016, Smile Telecom was the first and only company to launch the service in Uganda over its 4G network. Ever reinforcing its pace-setting streak with innovative products and enhanced service offerings. The company introduced the KaDigitoo VoLTE phone and later launched the SmileVoice app which brought Voice over LTE and SmileUnlimited.

VoLTE is a technology that allows voice calls to be carried over the LTE network infrastructure, instead of the older legacy voice networks. This means that voice calls can benefit from the high-speed, low-latency, and wide coverage of LTE, resulting in a superior voice experience for customers. VoLTE also enables High Definition (HD) voice quality, which makes conversations sound more natural and lifelike. Additionally, VoLTE allows customers to use voice and data services simultaneously, without any disruption to their 4G browsing experience.

To enjoy VoLTE, customers need to have a compatible device and a 4G SIM card. They also need to update their device’s operating system (OS) to enable VoLTE. Once enabled, customers will see a VoLTE icon on their device’s status bar, indicating that they are ready to make and receive HD voice calls.

Airtel Uganda has another first, as it will be the pioneer to launch VoLTE on its 5G-Ready Network, which is designed to support the next generation of mobile services and applications. With VoLTE, Airtel Uganda is giving its customers a reason to imagine a better future of communication, where voice calls are crystal clear, fast, and seamless.

According to Airtel Uganda Managing Director, Manoj Murali, “We continue to challenge ourselves, innovate and give more Ugandans reasons to imagine. VoLTE is an innovation that will allow our customers to make and receive high-quality voice calls without any disruption to their 4G browsing experiences.”

Airtel Uganda has been leading the market in introducing innovations in the Uganda telecommunications industry. Some of its previous firsts include eSIM, which allows customers to carry up to 10 embedded (e)SIMs in one phone; 5G readiness, which awaits spectrum allocation; and SmartPole, which allows distribution of good network coverage in built-up areas in the city.

This latest innovation by Airtel Uganda follows the successful announcement of the brand’s new theme, A Reason to Imagine, which is aimed at giving its customers an opportunity to do more by harnessing their potential by delivering relevant solutions that enhance their communication using its voice, data, and other services offered.
