The 2024 Global Passport Index has recently been released, revealing the rankings of passports from around the world. According to the latest report by Henley and Partners, the Ugandan passport has climbed up the rankings to secure the 73rd position, a notable improvement from its previous position at 77th in 2023. Out of 199 nations worldwide, Uganda now shares its passport power rank with the Philippines and Cape Verde Islands.

The global passport power ranking is determined by assessing the number of destinations that passport holders can access without a prior visa, as well as their visa-free scores. With a visa-free score of 69, Uganda’s passport holders can now enjoy easier travel to several countries without the need for a visa.
While Uganda has made progress in climbing the global passport rankings, it still lags behind its neighboring countries, Kenya and Tanzania. Kenya currently holds the 67th position, while Tanzania is ranked 69th. Both countries have higher visa-free scores, with Kenyan passport holders enjoying a score of 76 and Tanzanian passport holders having a score of 73.
At present, nationals from 39 countries can visit Uganda without the need for a visa. Additionally, citizens from nearly 40 countries can obtain visas upon arrival, making it more convenient for travelers. However, nationals from over 100 countries still require visas to enter Uganda.
Taking a look at the top of the global ranking, six countries share the first position: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain. These countries offer their passport holders the highest number of visa-free destinations. Finland, South Korea, and Sweden tie for the second position, while Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom are placed in the fourth position.
The improvement in Uganda’s passport ranking is a positive development for the country. It signifies increased global recognition and opens up opportunities for Ugandan citizens to travel more freely. As the country continues to strengthen its diplomatic ties and improve its global standing, it is expected that the passport rankings will continue to improve in the future.
