The Ugandan Ministry of Information, Communications Technology, and National Guidance (MoICT) is teaming up with the ICT Association of Uganda (ICTAU) to host a groundbreaking Intellectual Property (IP) Conference on April 24th, 2024. This one-day event, that will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala, aims to be a game-changer for Uganda’s innovation ecosystem, with a particular focus on empowering female innovators in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Leveling the Playing Field for Women in Innovation
The conference theme, “Harnessing IP in the Digital Era to Advance Gender Equality,” underscores the critical need to bridge the existing gender gap in intellectual property ownership and commercialization. Statistics reveal a stark reality: only 16% of patent applications in Uganda originate from women. This conference seeks to dismantle the roadblocks that hinder female innovators from transforming their ideas into marketable products.
The Intellectual Property Conference goes beyond simply providing information about intellectual property rights. It aspires to create a comprehensive support system for female innovators. The event will offer a valuable platform for participants to:
- Gain in-depth knowledge: Experts will deliver insightful sessions on the intricacies of IP rights, empowering attendees to understand how to protect their creations.
- Showcase innovations: Female innovators will have the opportunity to present their groundbreaking ideas to a wider audience, fostering potential collaborations and attracting investment.
- Navigate the IP landscape: Attendees will receive guidance on navigating the processes of IP assessment, registration, and commercialization, ensuring their innovations reach their full potential.
Unveiling the Intellectual Property Toolkit: A Roadmap to Success
One of the most anticipated aspects of the conference is the unveiling of the much-needed Intellectual Property Toolkit by the MoICT. This comprehensive resource will equip innovators with the tools and knowledge required to navigate the complexities of IP protection and management.
The conference isn’t just about knowledge dissemination; it’s about fostering a supportive environment for female STEM innovators. The event will facilitate dialogue and interaction between innovators, industry experts, potential collaborators, and established female leaders in STEM fields.
This focus on building a network of support is crucial for overcoming the challenges faced by women in innovation. According to a UNESCO report, bias, limited resources, and unequal opportunities create significant obstacles for women pursuing STEM careers.
Charting the Path for Ugandan Innovation
The IP Conference represents a pivotal moment for Uganda. As Mr. Gideon Nkurunungi, CEO of ICTAU, aptly states, “Uganda’s climb up the global IP rankings starts with our actions here.”
The conference is a call to action for all stakeholders – from young female innovators to seasoned professionals – to work together in building a robust innovation ecosystem. By fostering creativity, providing essential resources, and dismantling gender barriers, Uganda can unlock its full innovation potential and become a global leader in the digital age.
The IP Conference is an open invitation for all those passionate about innovation and gender equality. This event represents an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and collaborate in shaping a brighter future for Ugandan innovation, driven by the brilliance of its female minds.
