Uganda will host the 19th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union

The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) is an organization in Africa that combines countries and mobile telecommunications providers in an attempt to dramatically increase development of the continent’s information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. The organisation was founded in 1977 as a specialised agency of the Organisation of African Unity, now African Union, in the field of telecommunications. ATU took its present name in 1999. This led to the transformation of the agency into a partnership between public and private stakeholders in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector.

Uganda will host the 19th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union Administrative Council from 4th to 6th April 2018 at Hotel Africana in Kampala. ATU is comprised of 45 member states and Uganda is a member or the Administrative Council. This event is organised by the Uganda Communications Commission.

Uganda Communications Commission tweeted,

ATU provides a platform for stakeholders involved in ICT to formulate effective policies and strategies aimed at improving access to information infrastructure and services. In addition, the Union represents the interests of its members at global decision-making conferences and promotes initiatives aimed at integrating regional markets, attracting investment into ICT infrastructure, and building institutional and human capacity.

Since its establishment, ATU has gone forward to become the number one organisation on the African continent that fosters the development of information and communication technologies infrastructure and services. It’s continues to work towards Africa becoming a full and active participant in the global information and knowledge society.

This is not the first event that the regulator of Uganda’s communications sector, the Uganda Communications commission has held this year. It has held a consumer parliament on March 22nd 2018 in Fort Portal on and also was one of the partners at the 2nd Annual Law Conference held on 27th March 2018.
