The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has ushered in a new era with the introduction of “UEDCL Light,” bidding farewell to the familiar “Yaka” prepaid system. This transition, which took effect on April 1, 2025, marks the end of Umeme Limited’s 20-year concession and the dawn of a new chapter in Uganda’s power distribution sector.
For years, Ugandans have associated prepaid electricity with the name “Yaka.” Now, as UEDCL takes the reins, “Light” becomes the new buzzword for keeping the power flowing in homes and businesses across the country. But fear not, fellow Ugandans – this change is more than just a facelift.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa, was quick to reassure the public: “Ugandans should not panic—everything remains the same. The only difference is that Yaka will now be known as UEDCL LIGHT to unify customers across all service territories”. It’s a change in name, not in nature.
What’s new, what’s not?
While the branding has changed, the core functionality of the prepaid system remains intact. Your trusty meter? It’s still there. Your meter number? Unchanged. Even those Yaka units you stockpiled before the switch? They’re still valid. UEDCL has gone to great lengths to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible for consumers.
How to pay for UEDCL Light using Mobile Money
Your smartphone remains your ticket to hassle-free electricity payments. Whether you’re Team MTN or Team Airtel, the process is straightforward:
- Dial your provider’s USSD code (*165# for MTN, *185# for Airtel)
- Navigate to the “Pay Bill” or “Utilities” section
- Look for “UEDCL Light” (it might still be under “Electricity” in some menus)
- Enter your meter number (yes, the same one you’ve always used)
- Input your desired amount and confirm with your PIN
You’ll receive an SMS with your token faster than you can say “load shedding”.
How to pay for UEDCL Light using Bank
If mobile money isn’t your cup of tea, fear not. Many banks and fintech platforms have got you covered. Whether it’s through a sleek mobile app or a simple USSD code (like *290# for Stanbic or *247# for Equity), you can pay your bill with just a few taps or button presses.
For those who prefer a face-to-face interaction or the feel of cold, hard cash, UEDCL service centers and authorized agents are spread across the country. Pop in, quote your meter number, and walk out with a token in hand or on your phone.
