The commission has clarified that it will never call any Ugandan to ask for personal details such as your PIN (Personal Identification Number) or OTP (One-Time Password). They don’t issue SIM cards and as such never call consumers regarding any SIM card-related service, be It SIM registration or upgrading. They also confirmed that they do not contact any member of the public on behalf of a telecom service provider.
Telecom companies are not supposed to call their consumers seeking verification and/or update or upgrade of SIM cards on phone. All SIM card verification and upgrading are done at call centers of the respective telecom company.
UCC advises members of the public to do the following:
When called by a suspected fraudster, UCC advises customers to hang up immediately, this way you won’t give the fraudster a chance. If a caller claims to be UCC staff, customers have been advised to report their phone numbers to your respective service provider immediately by dialing 100. (All telecom operators can be called by dialing 100) It’s very paramount that you do not share your PIN and/or OTP with anyone for whatever reason.
UCC also advises that you do not send money in response to a random demand or engage in a mobile money transaction with unfamiliar persons. If in doubt, hang up immediately and contact your service provider for verification.
