Uganda communications commission (UCC) is beginning a new 2018 wind of change against cyber crime. Having setup various measures last year against online fraudsters. UCC seems is now implementing a new measure where all phone serial numbers are to be registered in order to fully cub cyber crime in Uganda. However much police issues out fresh warnings every now and then about social media and online crimes. More cases are registered in the long run. As a result UCC has come up with the fresh new plan to end cyber related crimes in 2018.
According to the New vision, the UCC executive director Godfrey Mutabazi said that online fraudsters mainly use mobile money tricks as a way to solicit funds from unsuspecting victims. However new tricks including cloning of victims phone numbers and use of computer software to disable network provided services to users are on the rise.
How the Fraud Works
Cyber criminals use computer software to re-register already registered sim cards. While the old trick of contest give way calls failed out. Criminals use active sim cards to actually make calls to contacts asking for money in return of a specific service. However much many people have fall victim to such tricks. Online fraudsters are not selective on who to attack, but rather use public contact lists to acquire new victims of cyber crime.
“Cyber crime is real, but in this particular one, the mistake public makes is not to report to the police, a reason why police lack actual data on the current cyber crimes” – Emilian Kayima Police spokesperson
The latest victim of cyber crime happens to be a top government official whose number was used to con district members. A one Ntwetwe County Mp Joel Ssebikali lost network access not realizing that his number was being used to defraud colleagues. Due to the rampant rise of similar crimes. UCC has decided to start the compulsory registration of phone serial numbers.
In conclusion. UCC says a computer emergency response team has been created to monitor cyber cases Together with all forms of malware. While the team reports to UCC. The new serial number registration process will reduce on the number of cyber related cases.
