On a compiled list of social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter & Whatsapp take the top slots, as the most used social media platforms in Uganda. While these launched with fully blown apps, we have seen them shrink these heavy apps into lighter versions that can accommodate slow networks and low specced smartphones that majority of the developing world population hold. Twitter joins the race after officially launching its Lite smartphone app in 21 developing markets that now includes our own Uganda.
Lite apps are immensely popular with Facebook Lite being among the most downloaded apps in Africa, registering thousands of reviews for having a minimal yet data friendly app. In reply to this, Twitter Lite also wants to checks most of those boxes but has launched at a time when users have to battle with OTT and mobile money taxes before opening accessing the social media channel. We can only hope it rakes up the numbers.
Availability of the Twitter Lite app
Although Twitter started testing its Lite version almost a year ago in Philippines, this marks its debut as a standalone app than a chrome extension. It is more of an appeal to markets that feature people who have a less budgets for data and poor network coverage as earlier stated.
Among the features shipped into Twitter Lite is the data saver option lets you control what to load as it’s fully optimized for 2G/3G networks. Furthermore, all main app features like the night mode & threads didn’t miss a slot on Twitter’s minimal app.
